4 Breathwork Practices to Cleanse the Body

The Four Purifications

Ayurveda explains that the Four Purifications are the 4 breathwork practices that can be used to calm the mind, stimulate the digestive system, restore balance and purify the nadis (energy channels of the body).

This intermediate practice is best done first thing in the morning, and on an empty stomach.

Watch each video and practice each pranayama (breath control) in the sequence provided below.

Alternate Nostril Breathing

Sanskrit: Nadishodhana

Benefits: Purifies the nadis - the energy channels of the body; balances the heating and cooling energies; balances masculine and feminine energies.

 

Skull Shining Breath

Sanskrit: Kapala Bati

Benefits: Purifies the head region, lungs and chest; calms the thoughts.

Fire Wash

Sanskrit: Agnisara Dhauti

Benefits: Stimulates the digestive system and strengthens uddiyana bandha (the upward abdominal lock that stretches the respiratory diaphragm).

 

Horse Mudra

Sanskrit: Ashvini Mudra

Benefits: Promotes downward flow of elimination; strengthens mula bandha (the root lock where energy from the pelvic floor to the navel is contracted and lifted up and towards the spine).

Contraindications: It is recommended to avoid Ashvini Mudra during your menstrual cycle.
